What is silent rejection?

Also known as subclinical acute rejection, or subAR, silent rejection leads to significant complications if left undetected or untreated.

It pays to know the lay of the post-kidney transplant land

Silent rejection. It’s out there.

Also known as subclinical acute rejection, or subAR, silent rejection is the earliest form of rejection in addition to being common. While significant damage has not yet occurred, historically it could only be detected by an invasive biopsy procedure.

All immune systems are territorial

No matter how much you need your new kidney, every immune system treats a transplanted organ like an intruder, much like it would treat a cold germ, bacteria, or virus.

Forging a new trail in silent rejection testing

The later form of rejection, called clinical acute rejection, is also common, affecting 10-15% of patients the first year post-transplant. Unlike silent rejection, it has always been detected with routine serum creatinine blood tests. Silent rejection was quieter. Yet detecting silent rejection early is important in helping prevent acute rejection later.

Bump the biopsy

The earlier silent rejection is identified or ruled out, the sooner you can get back on the path of healthy living.
